An Overview Of Pro Football Picks

Fantasy sports and games have become increasingly popular as the use of the internet has expanded. Gary Chiappetta and David McNamara first invented virtual games in 1988, and now these fantasy games have become a global phenomena which transcends national boundaries. There are several different types of leagues that participants may wish to engage in, each one offering their own rules of play. The following information offers a further explanation of the pro football picks available.

These fantasy games offer the participant to act as a general manager of a virtual football team. The players that an individual is able to manage are normally selected from a professional team of footballers, which play in a national league. Therefore, the fantasy league is an interactive virtual competition.

Players of the game are allowed to perform a variety of actions which may include dropping or adding team members, trading, drafting and changing rosters. There are many forms of fantasy league for players to choose from, however, two of the most popular are head to head and total points leagues.

As the name suggests, the head to head league involves different opposing teams playing against each other every week. Weekly matches are won by the team who obtains the most points during the game. The teams with the best win record, that is, who have won the most games, are then able to progress to the playoffs.

The total points league requires players to accumulate points over the duration of the games. The teams with the highest points are then eligible to qualify for, and advance to, the playoffs. Unlike the head to head game, where the win or loss record dictates which teams will qualify for the playoffs.

Participants of the dynasty league will retain many or all of their players throughout the years. This enables the team owner to build their preferred team over time. Some participants believe that this option allows for a greater team spirit and sense of unity.

Salary cap leagues do not focus so much on points or win loss records but the salaries available to players. Each player receives a salary, however, there is a maximum salary limit. As such a player can be withdrawn once the salary ceiling has been reached. Giving the name ‘Salary Cap’ to the league.

Pro football picks offer a number of leagues for the player to engage in, which include total points, dynasty, head to head and salary cap. The internet offers a spectrum of opportunities to engage in play, and various leagues are also available.

NFL Power Rankings From Last Season

Posted on April 29th, 2011 in Football | No Comments »

The 2010 professional football season was a season that did not disappoint. It was a season full of drama, and a great finish with the Packers and the Steelers playing for all the marbles in the Super Bowl. The title game was eventually won by the Packers in great style in a game that lived up to its billing. Here are the NFL power rankings from 2010.

The Green Bay Packers are the top dog in the NFL rankings, and there is no wonder why. They beat out the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl. It was one of the most memorable and entertaining Super Bowls in recent history. It makes sense that the Steelers are in the number two spot, right behind the Packers they lost to.

Next in the top twenty spots from last year you have the Jets at spot number three followed by the Falcons at number four. The Falcons have a dynamic young quarterback in Matt Ryan with a defense that is smothering. Their ranking may increase this year. The following teams, the Ravens, Bears, Patriots, and Saints round out the next spots. They were just plays away from advancing in the playoffs.

The Bucs follow next. They have a young coach and a very young team. Watch them this year. The Chiefs, Colts, and Eagles follow right behind them. The Colts could have been a little higher if they did not have so many injuries. It just goes to show how injuries can plague the success of a team. The Giants, Chargers, Raiders, and Seahawks are next. This was a first. The Seahawks made the playoffs, and with a losing record.

The Rams, Dolphins, Jaguars, and Cowboys follow. You expect the Cowboys, with all their history, to be higher. But, with the season ending injury to star quarterback Tony Romo, the Cowboys ended less than average. They became the biggest disappointment of the NFL season with all that talent.

From one to twenty, these are the NFL power rankings from the 2010 season. The 2011 season will provide just as much if not more excitement.

Atlanta Beats Chicago To Improve To 4-1

Posted on November 1st, 2010 in Football | No Comments »

The Atlanta Falcons didn’t so much win their Sunday Night NFL Football game against the Chicago Bears as much as the Bears lost it. A series of costly mistakes and turnovers in the red zone negated an otherwise solid road effort for the Bears, as Atlanta held on to win 21-14 at the Georgia Dome. Chicago held a decisive edge in most of the statistical categories, but was undone by untimely turnovers. Atlanta improved to 4-1 with the victory while Chicago slipped to 3-2.

Chicago also disappointed fans who bet on NFL football by failing to cover the pointspread as +4 road underdogs. Both teams’ ATS records match their straight up records with the Falcons moving to 4-1 against the number while the Bears slumped to 3-2. The 35 combined points went UNDER the posted total of 46. Both teams have now gone UNDER in three of five games this season.

Winning Falcons’ QB Matt Ryan chose to credit his defense rather than point to Chicago mistakes as the determining factor in the outcome:

“Our defense, give them some credit. Our guys stepped up and made some plays when we needed them to.”

The Bears did a good job shutting down Falcons’ star running back Michael Turner. He came through with the game on the line, however, rushing for the winning touchdown with just over three minutes remaining in the game. Ryan praised his running back’s effort:

“Our offensive line did a great job just giving me just enough time to get the ball off, and then Michael Turner did what he does. The offensive line provided a great push and just paved his way.”

The Falcons are now 4-1 for only the fifth time in team history, the last coming in 2004. Despite their solid start, they’re still trying to keep pace with the red hot New Orleans Saints who improved to 5-0 with their win over the New York Giants earlier in the day. On this occasion, the Falcons’ Ryan was outplayed by the Bears Jay Cutler between the twenties but the Atlanta signal caller made all of the right moves in scoring range.

Atlanta can improve to 5-1 and break the mark for best start in franchise history with a win on the road at Dallas next Sunday. That’ll be followed by an even bigger road game, on Monday Night Football against the New Orleans Saints-a contest full of all sorts of implications for the eventual divisional championship in the NFC South. The Bears will be back on the road next weekend to take on the Cincinnati Bengals before returning home for games the following two Sundays against the Cleveland Browns and Arizona Cardinals.

Titans Hold Off Bills In NFL Hall Of Fame Game

Posted on November 1st, 2010 in Football | No Comments »

The NFL preseason got underway on Saturday with the annual Hall of Fame Game, and the Tennessee Titans earned the victory as they built a 21-3 first half lead before holding off a late Buffalo Bills comeback to prevail 21-18.

Tennessee starting QB Kerry Collins and backup Vince Young both looked sharp as they combined to lead the Titans offense to three first half touchdowns. Collins, who signed a two year $15 million contract during the NFL off season, sounded optimistic about his teams prospects this year based on the opening game results:

“I’m encouraged. It doesn’t take as long to get ready, but I’ll take advantage of the work I’m going to get.”

Young struggled early with his touch, but recovered to hit Paul Williams on a second quarter TD that staked Tennessee to a 21-3 lead. After the game, he admitted that getting back in the groove was just the nature of the beast in the NFL preseason:

“It happens, man. I know everybody wants me to go out and be perfect, but it’s not happening like that. You can’t just jump into it.”

The only memorable offensive production for Buffalo came courtesy of Terrell Owens. T.O. was only on the field for one possession, but had two catches for 27 yards from Trent Edwards. After the game, Owens downplayed talk of it being a statement:

“It was just what was open, Trent saw it and threw it to me. Whether or not it was a statement remains to be seen. I feel comfortable with the offense. I like it in Buffalo, but we all have a lot of work to do.”

Bills QB Edwards focused on the positives:

“We can build off that one opening series. Preseason is about getting comfortable. You make mistakes, then work on them. But you can take a good drive like that and go with it, too.”

The NFL preseason continues for both teams this weekend. Buffalo will play host to the Chicago Bears while the Titans will play a home game against the Tampa Bay Bucs.

Giants Top Panthers On Wild Fumble Return Finish

Posted on October 21st, 2010 in Football | No Comments »

The NFL couldn’t have scripted a better ending to their first nationally televised Monday Night Football contest, even if it was just a preseason game. New York Giants rookie Tommie Hill returned a fumble 18 yards for a touchdown with 0:00 on the clock to break a deadlocked game and give his team a 24-17 victory over the Carolina Panthers in NFL preseason action at The Meadowlands.

Carolina’s fourth string QB Hunter Cantwell fumbled the football after his arm was hit on a pass attempt as time expired. Hill grabbed the loose ball and headed to the endzone for the shockingly bizarre finish and a Giants victory.

Tommie Hill was in shock as he spoke about his game winning touchdown return:

“I’ve never seen a game end like that, not that way. I’m just a rookie trying to make the team. Anything like that that helps the team win in turn helps me. It was just a fortunate situation and I made the most of it.”

Hill, an undrafted rookie out of Colorado State had already become a favorite of Giants fans due to his tenacious, high impact playmaking. His touchdown will no doubt bolster his efforts to make the NFL roster.

Carolina coach John Fox sounded more bemused than dejected at his teams unusual loss:

“Kind of an interesting ending. Both sides have a lot of work, but we have time. We have three weeks to do it

Giants QB Eli Manning, who recently became the NFLs highest paid player, put a positive spin on his short night of work:

“We ran the ball really well, hit a couple passes and we got a touchdown. That is always the goal. We did a nice job with it, so I thought we were effective as the first group.”

Carolina will travel to Miami for a game next Saturday against the Dolphins. The Giants will head to Chicago to face Jay Cutler and the Bears.
